Monty, what can we say about monty? He is a 3 year old, American bulldog, a loveable goofball with 3 brain cells (which never meet). He adores other dogs and is content with the slightest bit of attention, bestowing love, body slams and licks to anybody he knows. But… monty has a different side.. a side that will be more easily understood by knowing somewhat of his past. .
2 years ago, we received an urgent plea for help for a dog who was going to be put to sleep.
On a gentle spring day, the kind where birds sing, tender flowers rear their heads and living beings feel anew with hope of better things to come, we are told that montys owner drove him to a park, dragged him from his car, screamed into his face, got back into his car and drove off, leaving a bewildered, 15 month old pup to fend for himself. This in itself would be heart wrenching enough but we are also told that further information came to light that the same man who dumped monty also stabbed another dog in the home to death. We can only surmise the kind of consistent emotional and physical abuse that monty endured, the sights that he has seen, the feeling of betrayal at being abused and abandoned by the person who was supposed to love and protect you. The anger, the heavy blows, the feelings of despair. This history would take its toll on any sentient being and at times, it shows. Monty isn’t keen on people he doesn’t know entering his space and it takes a serious investment of time to make friends with him but once you are his friend, you won’t find a more loving and loveable dog around!
We had thought that monty might be best staying as a sanctuary dog but as monty has made more and more friends, we have begun to wonder if just maybe, there may be the right home out there for monty, to help him forget his past and live the rest of his life to the fullest?
Monty is a big, strong dog and would need an owner who has experience with socialising, traumatised dogs.
He would need an adult only home.
We dont hold many expectations that monty will find the perfect home in a hurry and so we try to make his life as enriched as possible through going for walks, playing with his friends and outings to the dog park until such time that we achieve our long term goal of buying a farm where monty can have more freedom.
